Outdoor Activities

Water sports
The rocky shores of many beaches like Smuggler’s Cove, in Tortola, or Deadman’s Beach in Peter Island, are ideal places for scuba diving. Norman Isle and some neighbor isles, known as Indians, are also good places for this sport.

At the Tortola island, windsurf lovers gathered at the Apple Bay, Cane Garden Bay and Josiah’s Bay beaches. Waves at the Trellis harbor also fill the bill for windsurf. Boardsailing BVI organizes windsurf and boat sailing training for beginners. (phone no. 495 2447).

November is the month when more wind surfers come.

Navigation
The British Virgin Islands are the best in the Caribbean for sailing. Some of the biggest hotels have catamarans and other similar boats for their clients. The Bitter End Yacht Club has a navigation school (Nick Trotter’s Sailing School, phone no. 494 2745), and gives the opportunity to rent bigger boats, some with crew included, for one-day tours or more.

The yachts international renting agencies, like Moorings, Stardust or Sun Sail, have branches in Tortola. For a complete list of smaller agencies, ask for information in the local tourists office, or advertising at the Welcome magazine. Yachts are generally rented for a week.

Submarines
The wrecked rests of the RMS Rhone, west of the Salt island, are the most popular place for submarines at the islands. The zone is part of a marine park. The isles known as Indians are also much visited by submarine fans. The excess of submarines seriously damages the reefs around Anegada, and the heavy anchors of the ships. Now, is forbidden to get into the reefs on submarines. The aim is to accelerate their recovery, and to establish in the near future a marine park in these waters.
