In 1980, Anguilla become a dependent territory of the United Kingdom, and in 1998, status was substituted by Overseas British Territory.

PLANNING THE TRIP

Banks and exchange
The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$), but American dollars are generally accepted.

The banks schedule is usually from 8:00 to 13:00 h from Monday to Thursday, and from 8:00 to 12:00 h and 15:00 to 17:00 hours on Fridays. There are banks at The Valley and George Hill. Departure tax by plane is $10 and by ferry $2.

Plant a tree
In 1995, hurricane Luis uprooted a great part of the few trees growing in Anguilla. Since then the Anguilla Beautiful Club (ABC), is running a reforestation plan, inviting citizens to adopt a tree. You can contact with them to the following address :

PRACTICAL TIPS

News
In Anguilla many newspapers and magazines are published, among them “What We Do In Anguilla”, a local magazine with useful information for tourists. The most important newspapers are the Chronicle and the Daily Herald.

Local radios are Anguilla Radio, Caribbean Beacon and ZJF 105:3 FM. There is also a local TV channel.

At The Valley you’ll find a small library.

There is a post office at The Valley (phone 497 2528, open from 8:00 to 12:00 hours and from 13:00 to 15:30 hours from Monday to Friday, and Saturdays from 8:00 to 12:00 hours)
The rest of the island has mobile post services.

Phone, telex and fax
The area code of Anguilla is 264. For international calls, telegrams and fax, you can go to the Cable and Wireless company offices at The Valley (open from Monday to Friday: Saturdays and holidays from 7:30 to 10:30; Sundays from 10:00 to 20:00 hours). From Anguilla you can make and receive international calls, 24 hours a day directly, without operator.

Medical Assistance
There is a hospital in The Valley, with 24 beds, that dispose of a permanent emergency service. The island also has three private clinics (The Valley, East End and South Hill). Dental service is some limited, but there is one dentist with a qualifies assistance. The most injured patients are transferred to Puerto Rico or Tortola hospitals (British Virgin Islands).

Culture
Every Thursday night the Mayoumba Folkloric Theatre company plays a show in La Serena Hotel in Meads Bay (phone: 496 6827). This company tries to maintain alive some traditions of the island through the music, dance and oratory.
