British Virgin Islands (map)
Located in the upper end of the arc formed by the Little Antilles, the British Virgin Islands are formed for more than 50 islands, isles and keys. Tortola is the biggest, with 19 km. long x 6 km. wide, and there is the highest point, at 540 m. above sea level. Despite most of these islands being of volcanic origins, corals form Anegada.

Festival:
Tortola’s carnival that celebrates abolition of slavery a whole week. The first Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of August, are official holidays.


PLANNING THE TRIP

Banks and Exchange
The official currency is the US dollar. Banks schedule is from 9:00 to 14:00 hours, though some are still open till 15:00 or 16:00 hours. There are banks in Road Town (Tortola) and Spanish Town (Fat Virgin). Most hotels exchange money and accept traveler checks.
