Anegada, an island of beaches and wrecked ships Anegada is a plain island, its higher point is no more than 9m. Because of its small size, frequently passes unnoticed by tourists, though those that decide to take a look, never look back. You could say that only one beach surrounds the perimeter of this island, from the south coast, where is the Anegada Reef hotel, till the north, where turtles deliver their eggs. The reefs in front of its coasts have sunk more than 300 vessels. However, divers must be warned about the risk of diving in these waters. To stop the damage affecting the sea depths due to ship’s anchors, a sporting port and some docks have been built. The native fishermen go out to work and provide the hotel restaurant with the best lobsters in the British Virgin Islands. This is also an ideal place to catch the flying fish.
Two small, paved roads converge in The Settlement, a town where most of the 300 inhabitants of the island live. In 1992, the decision to repopulate the lagoon with flamingos brought some critics, but it was a success. These birds not only settled down perfectly, but also mixed with the wild flamingos already living here. If you are thinking of spending just one day here, you better rent a jeep, and visit Loblolly Bay, in the north coast, a beach flanked by two bars.
LIFE AT SEA
The trade winds have made the Caribbean, one of the favorites destinies for sailing lovers around the world
The sight of the boats sailing over the quiet waters surrounding the island of Grenada seems a dream. And you have to see this, to believe it: white sand harbors extending at the feet of exuberant hills, picturesque port towns and lively beach bars. During the winter months, visitors from all around the world go to the Caribbean on board of their own boats. There are also companies that rent big sailing boats, with captain and crew included. Love of the British for the sea, explains the fact that in the British Virgin Islands, many regattas are celebrated. In Antigua, every year at the end of April, takes place the Sailing Week, a prestigious race previous to the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta.
The Cruisers These ships, some of them really floating hotels, are a very profitable business for the economy of these islands. Most of their routes start in Miami. From the beginning, passengers can be sure of having 24 hours of fun. During the day, tourists take the opportunity to explore the corners of a new island or go shopping at the endless duty free shops next to the cruiser’s stations. Some lines offer thematic vacations, like for example trips only for homosexuals.
FISHING In Dominica there are boats built very much like to those used by the Arawak, the canoes. These Indians were experienced fishermen using lances to catch fish. On some other occasions, they throw the fishes the branches of a tree, called in Papiamento “matapisca”, having a poison to paralyze even the bigger fishes, without risk for men. Now it is possible to capture huge fishes, like tunas, marlins and others, while sitting in a motorboat. Here are private boats equipped with special fishing rods, offering one-day tours. But you better make your reservation from home. Other companies rent fishing rods and all the necessary equipment for fishing.
